Marae Visit

Room 9 have been writing recounts about our recent marae visit. Here are some snippets of our writing.

Yesterday Rooms 9,8 and 11 lined up at the school gate, getting ready for a bus trip to go to a marae in Dunedin. Tavis

Mrs Simpson came to say goodbye. Once she said goodbye, Nanny said a karakia. Ella

Our bus had seat belts and that was very weird for us. It was the first time I went on a bus with seat belts. Emma

The bus was like a plane on the ground and the air conditioning was like a winter breeze. Rylan

When we got there, our bus driver missed the turn off because he thought the bus was too big to get through the driveway. Emmy

We were finally in Dunedin. I gasped. “We’re here,” I yelled. Turongo

Then we hopped out and Nanny Whaia told us boys to go to the back to protect the women. James

As we were walking to the marae I was thinking to myself, I wonder what it’s going to be like in there? Before we walked into the marae we took our shoes and bags off . Millie

The man started to speak. Everyone sat quietly with respect. Then we had a hongi. Row by row everyone pressed noses. Hannah B

For weaving Piwaiwaka did a sushi roll. It was really hard so I got an adult to help me weave. I got the hang of it but I ran out of time because you had to weave a lot. Quickly I went to wash my hands because flax can give you the runs. Luka

After that we went to another activity called instruments. There were instruments made of bone, wood and also string. There was an instrument that flew above your head and it sounded like a helicopter. Konnar

My group went to Maui and Matau. If the man said “Matau” we let go of our stick and grabbed the left person’s stick. We would do the same with “Maui” except to our right. Reed

Then we moved to the story telling. The story was about a boy and a whale. Sadly a man stole the whale and killed it. The boy went and found the man who had killed the whale, and ate him for tea… I had a wonderful day but I really wanted to play with the instruments. Cooper

Term 1, Week 3

Our Marae Trip.

On Wednesday 14th February we went to the Kaikorai Valley marae with Rooms 8 and 11. We learnt and experienced a range of marae protocol such as taking off our shoes before entering the wharenui. We listened respectfully during the powhiri and mihis and participated in giving a hongi. There were a range of activities that we enjoyed such as weaving flax, stick games, story telling and musical instruments. It was an awesome day out. Here are some photos from our trip.

Term 1 week 2

Week 2 has been a different week with Waitangi Day and parent interviews. It was great to set some learning goals and for whanau to share their knowledge of the learner. Here are some of the things we have achieved this week.
We finished off our art phones and these are now on display in the classroom. The children have done a fantastic job of these and I know their parents enjoyed reading them at interviews.

We made 2D shapes with Mrs McDougall. They look great hanging in our classroom.

We wrote a class treaty after co-constructing some class "rules" so everyone is happy and safe at school. We are going to examine all of our school's values and discuss how they relate to us.

Each day we are learning how to say what the day and the weather are in Te reo.

Term 1, Week 1

Welcome to Room 9's Blog. 

We have had a great first week getting to know one another and learning the class routines and expectations. We are working on creating a class culture of respect and valuing each other.
Some of the things we have done this week are make an art phone, athletic rotations, basic fact and spelling tests, find our learning buddies for the term and make 3D shapes with polyhedron. Check out our designs in the photo!
